Ships USP First-Class.Though headliners Bobby Bonilla and Barry Bonds have left Steel City, the Pirates still retain the nucleus of their 1992 division championship team in Tim Wakefield, Andy Van Slyke and Jay Bell. Wakefield, once a power-hitting first base prospect, went 8-1 in his remarkable rookie season. The knuckleballer didn't slow down in the postseason, collecting two of Pittsburgh's three playoff victories. Van Slyke has been the glue of the Pirates for their last three N.L. East championship seasons. In 1992, he hit .324, more than 30 points better than his previous career best. The five-time Gold Glove center fielder also piled up the extra-base hits, finishing third in the league with 310 total bases. Bell struggled early in the year but delivered down the stretch for the Pirates. He hit .297 with 26 RBI in the final 54 games, and his 22-game hitting streak was the longest in the National League.
