Sheffield, a .194 hitter with Milwaukee in 1991, posted the largest increase in batting average of any Major Leaguer and became just the third player ever to increase his batting average by more than 135 points from one season to the next (minimum 200 plate appearances). His success at the plate could be traced to his ability to make contact; despite delivering outstanding power numbers with 33 homers and 100 runs batted in, the San Diego third baseman struck out only 40 times.
